ADAPTA | Climate Adaptation Project
Examples of Agricultural Adaptation to Climate Change
ADAPTA is a dissemination project on sustainable management practices that farmers, ranchers and forest managers can adopt to increase their resilience to climate change.
ADAPTA documents stories of agricultural producers in Puerto Rico that practice the conservation of resources such as soil and water, crop rotation, integrated pest management, composting of organic waste, agroecology and other good practices such as agroforestry.

Artisan EcoTours in Puerto Rico: A Conversation Between Master Craftsmen
Date: August 2020
Runtime: 14:34
Language: English
A new Artisan EcoTour program is launching soon in Puerto Rico, proudly presented by GreenWood and the Caribbean Climate Hub of the U.S. Forest Service International Institute of Tropical Forestry. Hear more about the program in this video, including an inspiring conversation between EcoTour master instructors René Delgado (of Puerto Rico) and Michael Fortune (of Ontario, Canada). The two met for the first time over Zoom in July 2020 to share their approaches to design in wood and discuss ideas for their 10-day workshop.
Our goal is to promote the Puerto Rican economy by fostering connections between the island’s tropical forests and vibrant community of wood artisans, and we’re looking forward to bringing this program to fruition as soon as it is safe to do so.

The second ADAPTA video features Dr. Joaquín Chong of the University of Puerto Rico and farmer Duamed Colón of AgroTropical, who uses innovative and sustainable techniques being used to build soil health and battle pests on a plantain and vegetable farm in Gurabo, Puerto Rico. Duamed is using a legume cover crop (Canavalia ensiformis) to increase organic matter, improve soil health, and reduce erosion and herbicide use.

Permaculture, Soil & Water Conservation for Climate Change Adaptation
Date: December 2016
Runtime: 11:40
Language: Spanish with English Subtitles
The third ADAPTA video presents soil and water conservation techniques utilized by an ecological farmer to deal with climate related issues in the mountains of Puerto Rico. Filmed at the Siembra Tres Vidas farm in Aibonito, where Daniella Rodríguez Besosa and a group of farmers grow vegetables, herbs and edible flowers using permaculture techniques and without the use of pesticides or chemical fertilizers.
Permaculture is a system of agricultural design based on the principles of ecology that seeks the healthy and harmonious integration of nature and people. Among the permaculture techniques that they implement are the use of terraces to prevent soil erosion and improve water infiltration in the terrain, and the use of mulch and cover crops to fertilize and regulate soil temperature.

What is Sr. Sapo’s new hobby?
Date: April 2017
Runtime: 03:53
Language: Spanish with English Subtitles
Sr. Sapo is a very popular figure among kids in Puerto Rico and Latin America and he has a new healthy hobby, agriculture!
The USDA Caribbean Climate Hub and the group Atención Atención Inc. partnered to produce the video that talks about how food is grown and its relationship with nature.
The video promotes agriculture and illustrates how food production is influenced by the climate through the experiences of Sr. Sapo in his home garden to fosters children’s understanding of how the food we eat is connected to sunshine, rain and the soil. In the video we see how Sr. Sapo learns to prepare the soil and manages to harvest fruits and vegetables after his garden was affected by a drought followed by a heavy flood, showing the importance of protecting the soil for agriculture.

In April 2018, GreenWood Global assisted the USDA Forest Service International Institute of Tropical Forestry and the USDA Caribbean Climate Hub in an assessment to salvage wood in the aftermath of hurricanes Irma and Maria which hit Puerto Rico in September 2017.
Building capacity to make the best use of hurricane downed trees and other vegetative debris will reduce vulnerability and increase resilience in the face of future storm events.

Climate Extremes in the Caribbean
Droughts and Hurricanes in the U.S. Caribbean
Date: December 2018
Runtime: 07:08
Language: English with English Subtitles
During the summer of 2018, the Southeast Climate Adaptation Science Center and the U.S. Geological Survey recorded the oral histories of resource managers attending a U.S. Caribbean drought workshop in San Juan, Puerto Rico. The oral testimonies collected here provide lessons learned from the past and solutions for the future. We hear stories of extreme storms like Hurricanes Irma and Maria, as well as stories of slower moving chronic issues like drought and how they impact communities and ecosystems.
These stories also provide insight into the science needs of the natural resource community in Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands – and we learn what types of information could help managers effectively plan for future extreme weather events.
