  • Postdoctoral Scientist in Climate Change, Working lands, and Natural Resource Conservation 
  • Visual Science Communicator 
  • Geospatial Information Manager

Postdoctoral Scientist in Climate Change, Working lands, and Natural Resource Conservation 

Host entity: USDA Caribbean Climate Hub / US Forest Service International Institute of Tropical Forestry

Dates: Open until filled. 18-month opportunity. 

Time: Full time, 40 hours/week

Stipend at GS-12 level. Includes medical and travel allowance.

Description of work:

  • Carry out research on climate change, working lands, and natural resource conservation in alignment with USDA Caribbean Climate Hub (CCH) mission to help US Caribbean society sustain and improve the viability of forestry and agricultural production, the availability and quality of soil and water resources, the viability and quality of rural lifestyles, and food security in light of climate variability and change.
  • Develop manuscripts for publication in collaboration with other USDA Caribbean Climate Hub staff and collaborators. 
  • Support on-going CCH research projects via co-authorship or revision. 
  • Maintain organized data and files. 

Qualifications for eligibility: 

  • Experience in research related to climate change, working lands, and natural resources 
  • Proficient in scientific writing
  • Proficient in Geographic Information System (GIS) and Remote Sensing 
  • Fluent in English  
  • Familiarity with climate change, tropical forestry and agriculture in the US Caribbean preferred. 
  • Education: PhD in Natural Resources, Natural Sciences, Environmental Sciences, Ecology, Biology, Climatology, Agronomy or related field preferred.
  • Location: Must be located in Puerto Rico or the US Virgin Islands. Preferably based at US Forest Service International Institute of Tropical Forestry in San Juan, Puerto Rico. 
  • Citizenship: Must be a US citizen to apply.

Visual Science Communicator 

Host entity: USDA Caribbean Climate Hub / International Institute of Tropical Forestry

Dates: Open until filled. 12-month opportunity.

Time: Full time, 40 hours/week

Stipend at $48,000/year, includes medical.

Description of work:

  • Develop branding for USDA Caribbean Climate Hub (CCH) materials.
  • Develop graphic design for CCH materials, such as fact sheets, posters and reports. 
  • Assist in web design and web maintenance.
  • Develop branded videos for CCH social media and YouTube.
  • Occasional photography, video recording, and video editing to document CCH activities.  

Qualifications for eligibility: 

  • Experience in graphic art (InDesign, Photoshop, Adobe Illustrator, Canva, or similar) 
  • Experience in video editing (Adobe Premiere Pro, iMovie, or similar)
  • Organized, independent. 
  • Bilingual English and Spanish preferred.
  • Familiarity with climate change, tropical forestry and agriculture preferred. 
  • Education: Bachelors or graduate degree. 
  • Location: Must be located in Puerto Rico or the US Virgin Islands. Preferably based at US Forest Service International Institute of Tropical Forestry in San Juan, Puerto Rico.

Geospatial Information Manager

Host entity: USDA Caribbean Climate Hub / International Institute of Tropical Forestry

Dates: Open until filled. 12-month opportunity.

Time: Full time, 40 hours/week

Stipend at $48,000/year, includes medical.

Description of work:

  • Organize and create inventory of existing GIS and Remote Sensing data.
  • Collaborate to manage and make database available to USDA Caribbean Climate Hub (CCH) and International Institute of Tropical Forestry (IITF) scientists. 
  • Collaborate in the creation of new spatial databases.
  • Carry out Geospatial analysis for CCH research projects. 
  • Collaborate in geospatial tools development and update.
  • Assist IITF GIS Analyst with management of GIS Laboratory via equipment inventory and management. 
  • Assististance with equipment and software purchasing
  • Support with administrative record-keeping, onboarding, inventories,  IT management 

Qualifications for eligibility: 

  • Proficient in use of Geospatial Information Systems, experience with Geospatial Analysis
  • Experience in data management, organization, inventory 
  • Education: Bachelors or graduate degree in Natural Resources, Natural Sciences, Environmental Sciences, Ecology, Biology, Climatology, Agronomy, Geography, Geographic Information Systems, Computer Sciences or related field preferred. 
  • Location: Must be located in Puerto Rico or the US Virgin Islands. Preferably based at US Forest Service International Institute of Tropical Forestry in San Juan, Puerto Rico.
  • Citizenship: Must be a US citizen to apply.
