About the Agricultural Statistics Tool
“Explore the agricultural diversity of Puerto Rico”
What is the Agricultural Statistics tool and what information does it provide?
Agricultural Statistics is an interactive platform created by the Caribbean Climate Hub to illustrate the origin and production of Puerto Rico’s main crops. The tool provides information on more than 100 agricultural products, the neighborhoods and municipalities where they are grown, and their production areas and quantities. Area and production statistics are summarized by neighborhood and by year, and can be displayed in map or table format at the island, agricultural region, municipality or neighborhood level.
To provide additional information on the crops, the tool also connects each of the crops with the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) plants database, which provides taxonomic descriptions and species distribution ranges.
Where do the data in the Agricultural Statistics come from?
Agricultural Statistics uses data provided by the Office of Agricultural Statistics of the Puerto Rico Department of Agriculture. This office, which collects, processes, analyzes and disseminates data on the agricultural sector of Puerto Rico, surveys more than 3,500 farmers, processors and vendors of agricultural products annually. Data values come from production estimates reported by farmers that participate in the agricultural surveys.
How up-to-date is the information provided by Agricultural Statistics?
The data used by Agricultural Statistics are compiled by the Office of Agricultural Statistics (OEA) of the Puerto Rico Department of Agriculture (PRDA) which conducts annual surveys of all farmers registered with the PRDA. The tool currently provides data from 2013 to 2016 summarized by neighborhood and municipality.
How do I use the Agricultural Statistics tool?
The “Home” page and the “Search” tab offer four search levels at which to display agricultural statistics: island level, agricultural region, municipality, and neighborhood. Once the search level is selected, the desired year must be specified in order to use additional filter options. Depending on the level, you can refine your search by choosing the year, agricultural region, municipality, neighborhood, and crops of interest. At the municipality level, other filter options offered include production quantities in kilograms, and hectares sown and harvested.
Clicking on “Map” will display the search in cartographic form.
The “Table” option displays the search in tabular form. In the table option you can obtain data on the production of each crop (quintal, millar, pounds, kilograms) and the planting area (cuerdas, hectares, square feet) in various units of measure. Additional information such as the scientific name of the species and the link to the USDA plant database are also listed in the table view. You can download the information in Excel or CSV format by clicking on “Export”. The default display option shows the first 500 data, but it is possible to adjust the number of data displayed in the “Showing Entries” window. The number of chosen data will also be updated on the map. For more details on how to use the tool, go to “User Guide” in the “Info” drop down menu.
